    About Location

Dalong, anciently known as Mengze DaDalong, now called Dalong Village, is also the Wutong Lake community,

    but also Fenghuang Yuan.

It has an unclear past and an ambiguous future.

It is the closest village to the school, renovated and stopped under the tide of urbanization and modernization,

leaving part of the vernacular culture behind, and stumbling forward slowly.

The study in this place is a retrospective, an exploration.

It is a way for us to get a glimpse of China's social development, and a channel for us to get in touch with the development of the countryside in a modernized society.

    Background

The English word for 城镇化 is Urbanization, and Urban in English includes both cities and towns, so urbanization can be the process of absorbing the agricultural population through the concentration of the population from the countryside to the cities and the development of the secondary and tertiary industries in the cities. It can also be expressed as the process of population concentration from rural areas to towns and the development of secondary and tertiary industries in towns and the absorption of the agricultural population. The essence of both concepts emphasizes the transfer of economic and social activities from the rural areas. It is only that the former emphasizes the shift to cities and the latter emphasizes the shift to towns, with a different geographical focus (Department of Development and Strategic Planning, 2016). New urbanization is the extended concept of urbanization, which emphasizes the balanced geospatial distribution of population and economic and social activities. Although it gets rid of the one-sided reliance on small towns in the past, it still emphasizes the important role played by small towns (Department of Development and Strategic Planning, 2016), this process is considered to be an inevitable path to modernization (People's Daily, 2022).

Amidst the tide of modernization, many villages have changed from agricultural, vernacular villages to industrial or cultural tourism, modern towns or districts. Books and textual information are macroscopic and distant; what does this trend actually looks like in reality? What is the impact of this trend on the locals? What advantages has it brought to a specific place? And what kind of predicament has been formed? To answer these questions, people need to really dive into the field, establish contact, experience personally, and then get to know it.

Ezhou City, Liangzi Lake District, Dalong Village is such a place, it has agricultural roots - in April 2009, Ezhou and Hubei United Investments and Properties Co., LTD decided to build the Wutong Lake New Area, in the north shore of Liangzi Lake, a 44 square kilometer piece of countryside. With the advancement of the construction, 70% of Dalong Village has been expropriated (Hubei Daily, 2013). Since then, the new and old life styles are mixed together, which leads to many problems, troubles, satisfactions and dissatisfactions. As stated in From the Soil —The Foundations of Chinese Society, "...... In the process of entering the modern society from the vernacular society, the lifestyles we have cultivated in the past bring problems in every aspect. " (Fei Xiaotong, 2018)

Globally, modernization and development is a theme worth exploring. In China, modernization and development has its own characteristics, which stems from social, economic and cultural roots and faces many challenges. By allowing students to read relevant materials, experience local daily life, and understand, explore as well as discover from two paths: text and field, this social study activity not only has educational function, allowing students to develop a sense of social responsibility, get close to the local culture, but also brings new perspectives and new blood to the development of this place.

Hope this activity can provide valuable references for the relevant parties, and if not, hope all participants can understand "society" and "our society" from the concrete places.

    Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore the paths of modernization and urbanization of local villages, and to understand and grasp the realities of the situation. The study was led by students from Global Cambridge High School Preparatory School. They decided on their own the purpose of their study and interviews based on their understanding of the book and the information they searched for. Perhaps they cared about the healthcare system, or economic development, or employment, or the public services in this area.

Students will choose their own directions, leave their own opinions, and make immature suggestions and comments, so it is difficult to say that there is a unified purpose for this social research activity.

We sincerely hope that in this process, students can understand and think about the world in a more diversified way, connect to and experience the society, and link knowledge with reality.
